Happy First Anniversary to our Dear Father George!
18 Months ago our worshipping communities could not be blamed for
being a little down. We had lost Father Phil so suddenly (RIP) and
despite the constant kindness and support of the Montfort Fathers
saying mass and trying to support us, our future as a community was
uncertain; some even drifted away.
Then a ray of sunshine, like a comet in the sky, Father George
landed in our midst, his opening remarks in his first homily being
"you can surely tell from my accent, that I'm Spanish";
we
were immediately and remain, 'hooked'.
Laughter in the church?
things sometimes going a little wrong but that did not really matter
when at the same time Father for some of us, started to rebuild our
bridge to God.
Then as suddenly as a comet appears, it disappears and so did
Father George! Why? What's going on? - despair starts to creep back.
Montfort Fathers reappear, kindly supply priests from the diocese
and of course our good Father and 3 Rivers coordinating pastor,
Father Michael Dennehey kept things going and we started to get used
to running things ourselves.
What joy when we discover that Father George WAS to be our Parish
Priest!
Then what sorrow as we learned that Father was also was so
weighed down with worry about his own family and bereavements - how
could we console and yet draw sustenance from Father's spiritual and
pastoral reserves. All we could try to say is that he also has a
family here who have grown quickly to care for him.
Thank you Father George for year 1 - with God's grace this will
be the first of many years!
